Here are 5 aspects of life that are worth looking at, to feel happy.
Recently, one college graduate student asked me an interesting question. I thought it was a great subject and decided to share my answers on this blog. Her question was " Now that I graduated, what do you think are the most important ingredients in designing a good life?
While a good life can be viewed from a personal standpoint; many often view it from these perspectives: material comfort, well-being, healthy relationships, meaningful job and activities, and a sense of being seen and belonging. Personally looking back, I believe there are some important elements to particularly consider. They all require specific attention. Before we talk about the top five most important I consider, I like to point out this as well. To enjoy a good life, it is imperative to take charge of it and show responsibility for the carefully chosen choices we make. Having the right life attitude requires seeking truth, respect, a pure heart, uprightness, and good moral virtues. Prioritizing what is important and what one wants in life is crucial. Once this is clear, the next step is to work on setting specific goals and strategies for the short and long term. Working diligently on them and not giving up on the first obstacle or second has its rewards. And remember, the roller-coaster of life requires respect, flexibility, perseverance, and patience. Now about these five most important elements that I consider:
1. Physical and Mental Health
You must do your best to maintain good health as long as possible. Without it, little chance of a long, fun, and fulfilling life. Exercising regularly and eating healthy are very helpful in preventing sickness and feeling energetic. Mental health should not be neglected as it is as important as physical health. Never be ashamed of seeking support, especially mental help. And remember, doing so is a sign of courage and strength, great qualities to have. Practice calmness on a daily basis which can be done utilizing relaxation or breathing techniques and meditation. They also help in reducing stress, just as doing some of your favorite relaxing pass times. Calmness is key to seeing clearly. Do your best to control what you can and don't sweat what you can't. Do not let your emotions get out of control. Rather make efforts to understand the nature of your suffering, the causes, and the means of liberation from your suffering. Live in the present moment as much as possible, as it prevents much unnecessary suffering. Practice the act of letting go and view problems as learning experiences. Love and be loved, as it fuels your endless pure energy. Thoughtful and wise choices will then benefit your physical and mental health while making life easier and more enjoyable.
And let's not forget in this category your spirituality. Spirituality is not just religion, it is also a philosophical concept of believing in something beyond the self. Many religions explore such a concept. Yes, it is important for your health and well-being. It is shown to have benefits from reducing stress, helping with coping with challenges, building positive emotions, bringing calmness, and promoting social support. Whether you are an atheist, have a personal faith, practice an organized religion, or question higher power; remember to always respect other people's beliefs. Searching for the meaning of life and seeking truth are an ever-ending journey that when researched with an open mind can bring tremendous understanding and growth.
2. Family
Family is important to our sense of belonging, security, and need for love. It is often family members who instill values in us and who provide support through our growth. If you desire, build your own family and love them unconditionally. Family gives you meaning in life and joy of existence like no other. when choosing a partner or husband, here are some recommendations.
Decide who you really want to have in your life and what traits are important to you. Be yourself and honest. You want to be comfortable around each other like you are with a best friend. Look for someone with similar interests but with some differences that make your relationship grow and thrive. It is usually best to have similar financial standards and similar social status or better. Be loving and respectful while understanding your differences. Nurture open communications which are key to a healthy relationship. Sexual connection is vital in a romantic relationship. Trust, respect, attention, and closeness in a couple's intimacy moment are essential. Don't fuss over the little things, let them go. When it comes to spending, consult each other, especially for the big ones. Creating a couple or family budget is always a good idea.
Finally, always take good care of your birth family, your family, and your added family by association. Be respectful, supportive, and loving. Be there for each other in good and bad times. Choose patience, understanding, and solutions while exploring differences rather than challenging them. Plan regular visits and enjoy celebrations together to build family bonds that will last a lifetime.
3. Work
Work is important as it gives us a sense of purpose and accomplishment. It helps us develop skills and abilities for what we love to do. It brings growth to our community and society. It provides us with financial support and a sense of security. In some cases, it can become a social network and a place where friendships develop. Yes, doing what we love can bring fulfillment and happiness. But it is not always possible to do so and you must stay realistic about that. You must be open to other possibilities and see how happy they can also make you. No matter what, do not chase money but rather a job and lifestyle that bring you happiness. Don't compromise on your core values and ethics for any company, position, or money. Keep up with your personal development through education and skills building, as life progresses quickly, particularly in the workplace.
4. Social Life
Social life is crucial for mental health, meaningful relationships, self-worth, and feeling less isolated or lonely in life. It provides opportunities for growth, as we learn from others and get involved with our community. Respectfully connect with others through your interests, be clear on boundaries, and volunteer through your community services. Join local clubs or participate in sports, fundraisers, hobbies, meetups, and events to name a few. Plan regular outings or parties with friends. Be open to including a new or lonely person in your friends group. Travel to see the world and make new friends that may open different perspectives on the world and your life. Take charge of your social life and treasure your true friends, they are few in life.
5. Environment
The environment (nature) provides us with the resources we need to live and thrive. It is the best teacher of life and impermanence. But the environment is also defined by our surroundings which I would categorize around our habitats, communities, churches, clubs, parks, transportation system, and recreation. All can be sources of enjoyment or challenging experiences. I also consider within this category, the importance of our inner circles of friends. They contribute to the betterment of our environment and humankind or not. So choose wisely, as your happiness depends on it too.
All those environments deserve your respect and attention. So live in the most respectful way possible to all of them. Keep nature clean and its endless defilement with the least negative interferences. It is our duty to future generations, as they deserve to enjoy its beauty too. Teach those values to children and nature will take care of the rest!
In the end, I believe that the sentiment of a well-lived life is the result of living on the right path. And such a pathway requires that all those elements be in a healthy balance. I wish you the clarity to see and embrace such wisdom.
