Black Rice

Black rice has a lot of benefits: flavor, health, and easy recipes!

I recently discovered that I absolutely love black rice! I plan to include it more often in my favorite anti-inflammatory meals now and then. Let me give you the health reasons I will do so. It is filling and helps slow my digestion which consequently prevents me from feeling hungry till my next meal. To top it all, I love its great light nutty taste prepared with a touch of olive oil!

Black rice, also known as forbidden rice, is a whole grain that is rich in antioxidants due to its high anthocyanin content. Scientists have found that antioxidants, such as anthocyanin, help protect cells against oxidative stress. Such stress increases the risk of heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and even some cancers. Black rice helps reduce inflammation in the body, supports weight loss, and helps with the promotion of healthy brain function. The only downside is that it is rather low on fibers. Solutions, it is easily mixed or served with a bunch of vegetables to add fibers. A great combo healthwise for sure! You can also consume black rice as an accompaniment to a protein or vegetables, with a salad, within a vegetarian meal, and even for a healthy dessert treat.

*1/4 cup (45gr) of black rice is about 160 calories, 1.5 g fat, 34g carbohydrates, 1 g fiber, 4 g protein, and 1.08 g iron.
